Frequently Asked
Questions
Q. How do I join? A. You can get a membership application package by contacting us with the email links on this website or by calling one of the contact people in the Membership and Recruiting committee. Q. Do SEASAR members get paid? A. No, its strictly a volunteer service. In fact it will cost you money to be a member. Q. How much does it cost? A. The first year membership is $25, subsequent years are $10/year. Q. What other requirements are there? A. You will require a Criminal Records check. Once we have your membership application package, we will provide you with a letter to take to the Redcliff RCMP and they will do the Criminal Records check at no cost. Q. What training is required and do I have to pay for that? A. Before you can go on a search or field operation, you need to complete the Basic SAR Skills Course which is about 60 hours long and the cost to SEASAR members is $60. You also need to have a current Standard First Aid with Level 'C' CPR. SEASAR has certified First Aid Instructors to teach our members. For members in good standing there is no charge for the First Aid training. Q. Is there other training available? A. Absolutely! Most of the training after the SAR Basics course is subsidized or available free. Tracking, swift water rescue, technical rope rescue, Critical Incident Stress Management, Amateur Radio license, Mountain Bike SAR are some of the possibilities available. Q. What about equipment? A. The team has a lot of gear but you will need some basic personal equipment for survival and comfort while in the field. You will learn lots about this during the SAR Basics course and may have some of the gear already if you are an outdoor enthusiast. Q. Are there Age or Fitness requirements? A. You must be at least 18 years old. We have members from 18 to 70+.years of age Obviously the more physically fit you are the more the challenging assignments you will be able to do. If you figure you can hike around for 4 - 5 hours with a 10 lb pack, you can probably do Search and Rescue in our area. In addition, there are always jobs in logistics and around the Command Post that don't require super fitness. |
